Meet Chris // @presidentpapi

1) What is your mission statement? A great idol of mine always said, "Have as much fun as possible!", and it's hard to argue with that. I totally realize that life is not always fun, but the best way forward is to deal with the lows and the hard times as they come; don't spend all your time worrying about what might happen, and keep your head up. We all go through it and so it's important to be there for others when they need it and they'll often be there for us too. Once you deal with the tough stuff, well, then it's back to enjoying life to the fullest. Deal with it, then move on. Don't wallow in misery, don't...

Sustainability Series: Why Use Natural Dyes?

For thousands of years, people used plants to dye materials and fabrics. The most widespread die with the oldest tradition is indigo, originating from India, over four thousand years ago.  Although natural dyes are better for our bodies and our planet, synthetic dyes took over the clothing industry due to convenience and demand for variation. It is vital to connect consumers back to their roots and why supporting natural products is important. Natural dyes are biodegradable, non-toxic, and non-allergenic. Because natural dyes are made from plants and organic matter, they can be antimicrobial, meaning the dyes repel bacteria's production, which are great for children's clothes or anyone with sensitive skin. Natural dyes aren't only great for our health, but also...

Sustainability Series: 5 Ways to Minimize Food Waste

Did you know that 40% of food that's grown, manufactured, and produced in the U.S never gets eaten? If food waste were a country, it would be the third-largest greenhouse gas emitter, behind the U.S and China. When we think of stopping climate change, we think of plastics, oil factories, and transportation, not the food on our plates. The average American family spends over $1,500 yearly on food they will never eat, food they could have donated, preserved, or composted. Our relationship to food needs to shift from Food waste ⤑ wasted food. This subtle word shift has substantial meaning. When we say “wasted food,” our minds conceptualize the resources and nutrients being thrown away. This mindset also shifts more responsibility to us (the...

MEET LEIA - @LEIA_VITA

1) What is your mission statement? To live a simple yet inspiring and colorful life connected to the rhythms of nature, all while fostering joy through community, the ocean, the arts, and a deeper connection to know myself.    2) What does sustainability mean to you? Sustainability is a mindset and a practical technique for living a harmonious life that doesn’t compromise the needs for future generations. Sustainability is a good first step, but I believe it’s not good enough. To truly live in a way that honors and respects ourselves, the earth, and the next 7 generations, we must embrace the concept of regeneration. We shouldn’t settle to just sustain the earth, but actually be active in regenerating it. ...

History of the Loom: Know how your clothes are made

Weaving fabric is an ancient practice that spans both time and culture. In Maya civilization, the goddess Ixchel taught the first woman how to weave at the beginning of time.  The loom threads across the globe from China to Colombia, and dates back to as early as Ancient Egypt in 4400 BC. Through centuries, the loom evolved to be the titan of all fabric creation.    By 700 AD, horizontal and vertical looms were found in Asia, Africa, and Europe. Looms with pedals for operating handles were discovered in Syria, Iran, and Islamic parts of East Africa. In Medieval Europe, weaving was done at home, but soon the craft spread and shifted manufacturing of fabrics to centralized buildings. The evolution of the loom...
